Hookah bars in college towns have created an atmosphere of positive traditions, as well as many other optimistic attributes (Hookah Use Widespread among College Students, 1). One of the greatest aspects of college is being a part of a great college tradition. Traditions can provide a noble sense of community, school spirit and overall welfare at a school with many students. The solution process of lifting the ordinance on banning public hookah bars would include the Manhattan City Commission using legislation during a regular meeting to lift the ordinance on public hookah smoking with a majority vote. Once the ban is lifted, promotion of public hookah business in the Manhattan Community with local students and residents would be needed to actually open a public hookah bar in the area. Today, hookah cafés (sometimes called hookah bars or lounges) are gaining in popularity around the world, including Britain, France, Russia, the Middle East, and the United States (Mara, 1). According to a 2011 study, 40.3 percent of college and university students surveyed had smoked tobacco from a hookah (Wake Forest, 1). These statistics apply to Kansas State University as well, because many college students live in the Manhattan Area. Hookah bars in the United States create a bridge for many Middle East and United States students at a time where America is at war in the Middle East. Bringing cultural sympathy through hookah bars at a local level can decrease misunderstandings between foreign and domestic students ("Hookah Bars Find a Place in America”, 1). Hookah is an activity centered on social interaction and is not usually smoked alone leading to interaction between groups of people who would have not interacted before a hookah bar was introduced in Manhattan.
