1. Main Characters
Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi)- A. In the book Piscine is the main narrator. His name comes from the French word for pool. B. Pi studies zoology and religion and is fascinated by how people and animals behave. Pi doesn’t want to kill Richard Parker because of these traits. C. Pi was a vegetarian at the beginning of the book but during the book he became more predator-like; he started hunting meat for his survival.
Richard Parker- A. Richard Parker is a bengal tiger weighing 450 pounds and is about nine feet long. B. He kills the hyena on the lifeboat and the blind cannibal. However, Richard Parker respects Pi’s dominance. Richard Parker doesn’t try to attack Pi as much in the book. C. When the ship first sank, Richard Parker competed with Pi for dominance, but as the book continued Richard Parker accepted Pi’s dominance. …show more content…
Minor Characters
Francis Adirubasamy- A. Francis is Pi’s “Mamaji”. Mamaji is an indian term for respected uncle. B. Francis taught Pi how to swim when Pi was a little boy. He told the author Pi’s story and gave the author a chance to meet Pi in person.
Santosh Patel- A. Pi’s father. Santosh was very fond of animals, so he decided to run the Pondicherry Zoo. B. He teaches his sons to care for animals, but also fear them. Santosh moved his family to Canada because of the harsh conditions in India.
3.Main Setting: 1960-1976. The Pacific Ocean was the main setting, Pondicherry, India was the 2nd most important setting.
