Our research led us to strengthen our connections with the transgender community in collaboration with the following organizations: Transgender Michigan, Affirmations, Gender Identity Network Alliance, Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit, and the Ruth Ellis Center. We also collaborated with Macomb Community College, the Michigan Region of Phi Theta Kappa, chapters from Oakland and Henry Ford Community Colleges, and social work students from Wayne State University. Additionally, we advertised at the local LGBT publication “Between the Lines.” As a result, we were able to create a more welcoming atmosphere for the transgender community.
Our officers developed a greater understanding of the transgender community, increased self-awareness of global transgender issues, and attendees reflected on what they learned through evaluations following the event. Many of our officers stepped out of their comfort zones by making phone calls and sending out emails. Research has helped our officers find data from websites, other sources, and teaching some officers how to present data in a concise manner.
