Honors English Class Reflection

On May 23rd of 2016, the class sauntered into their final period of the day, Honors English. After a few minutes of socializing the class took their seats to begin another day of scholarly events. To our dismay, the agenda that led in store for us was quite short, which is usually a rare occurrence. After reading the agenda, many students quickly realized we would be reading multiple excerpts from “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” This resulted in the departure of several students back to their lockers to grab a copy of their book. As you know our long awaited summer break is right around the corner, although yet it feels so far away. For those who are counting, including myself, students have eleven more school days until …show more content…
Our class was scheduled to visit it from 1:30-2:00. Although, many didn’t seem very excited to attend, due to the fact that most of the class had already attended. Regardless to say that the class would rather go twice, instead of reading “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” Mrs. Way informed us of this on Friday, although many seemed to forget over the weekend. After reading the Daily Logs, there were only a few minutes left until it was time to scurry down to the library. Soon enough it was time to depart. Once we reached the studious library, it felt as though we were taken into another world. Hundreds of works of art filled the library with creativity and inspiration. Before we began looking, we were instructed to pick up a small sheet of paper to vote for our favorite work of art. With that, we were released into the maze of vibrant artwork throughout the library. While some perused the jaw-dropping artwork, others socialized and played a few competitive checker games. I chose to watch the ruthless checkers match between Sam and Devin, following several matches between Sam and Derek. Soon enough, though, two o'clock swiftly arrived sending us back to …show more content…
Way immediately began to read a long list of excerpts from “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” The first excerpt on pages 87-90, described Chris’s experiences at the zoo. After reading a few pages we learned countless aspects that represent Chris’ innocent personality. Most importantly, we experience Chris and his father’s strong feelings toward one another. Chris’ father clearly states his ongoing love and care for his son. Following this, Chris describes what he believes is true love. For example, Chris states, “because loving someone is helping them out when they get in trouble, and looking after them, and telling them the truth, and Father looks after me…” Another crucial piece of this section revolves around the values of truth and lies. Most of the time the simplest ideas are often the truth, although many stray from this to make others believe. I think this is what readers should take away from this excerpt, due to the fact that it describes Chris and his mother’s situation

I watched the entrance, where the remaining few students entered and were greeted by their friends like a mini reunion. The class was covered in aquatic animals, inspirational quotes, and a giant smart board that read “Welcome to English 9.” The bell rang, “Good morning students’ and welcome to English 9, for today’s assignment I would like for you guys to get in groups of four,” said the English Teacher. Everyone quickly scrambled to get in groups with their friends. The sight of a group of three girls made me feel welcome, I asked “Can I join your group?”…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

The world is full of many different books, but sadly not all of them can be considered “good.” A classic book is a book that a widespread group of people label as “good,” with an influence wide enough to be recommended by schools and colleges for their students to read. One of these such books is The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, except the fact that this book, while commonly loved by many, is on its own not a good piece of literature, as it is filled with a number of flaws such as an incomplete story line and a lack of character development. One of these issues is an irredeemable cast of supporting characters, as both Christopher’s father and mother show potential in the story to be interesting and enjoyable…

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a very unconventional and riveting novel. A young boy named Christopher narrates the entire story through his eyes. This gives the reader a sense of how a person with Autism views the world. Before each of the beginning chapters, the author has illustrated faces with divergent expressions. These faces portray how one of Christopher's teachers, Siobhan shows Christopher how to reveal people's feelings as they speak to him.…

On the 1st day of AP English class all you heard was the clock barely ticking, sweat coming off of the teacher forehead and the students taking out paper and writing utensils to take notes on what we need. What stood out was Mrs. Fantroy’s strong voice along with the books that were shown for everyone to read that semester. The books looked like they could have come from out of ancient tombs or something. She had at least two lengthy looking books. She stated, “These are just some books for you guys to read just this semester.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

Reflecting on your previous writing can bring to light how your writing skills have improved and grown into your current writing. Previously, I had been exposed to a lot of writing and reading in my AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature classes in high school. The writing skills that I had learned in both classes dealt with analysis papers pertaining to a specific prompt or style. I also had been exposed to lots of literature, specifically short novels and poetry that I had to interpret. My high school AP English classes prepped me for the college level writing class at High Point University.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…
