Honors College Expectations

As a senior in high school, I will be transitioning into college very soon. Because of this, I am thinking about my future and the types of things I would like to experience in college. I have taken honors level courses for the entirety of my high school career. As an honors student, I am accustomed to the curriculum and expectations of an honors course. I am also accustomed to being around other students of my caliber. That being said, I am looking forward to the diversity that college will bring, though I want to be in my comfort zone. I know that an honors college will provide me with the diversity that I seek, as well as communication with other high-achieving students. I am hoping for professors that will be able to teach me in new ways, …show more content…
I have lived in small towns for the duration of my life. Most everyone dresses the same way, talks the same way, behaves the same way, and everybody knows everybody. I am looking for a change. I want to be able to develop myself in a way that is professional, yet still uniquely “me.” It is difficult to stand out individually in a crowd that does the same things as you. I hope to be a part of a group that stands out because of the individual personalities that make it up. I think that I will make many new friends amongst the different people that I meet, but I will also be academically challenged by these people, as they will be on the same academic level that I am on. This way, I am getting the diversity that I want, while staying in familiar territory. My goal of individual development is sure to be met through an honors college …show more content…
Teaching styles vary amongst any classroom, though they vary more so in an honors classroom, simply because there is a larger variety of students. Because of this, I am hoping to learn new cultures and different things from the students that I will meet in an honors college. I feel that I can become more accepting of other peoples’ views and cultures if I am around those mature enough to explain them or defend them rationally. Some people just say that they believe something because they do, but offer no explanation of evidence that what they believe is true. I know that students within an honors college have an intelligence high enough to be able to defend their views, and this helps me to have a higher respect and understanding for those that are different from me. The honors college at the University of South Carolina-Upstate requires students to complete a minimum of 60 hours of community service. This is absolutely wonderful, as I feel that people grow tremendously while serving others. There is nothing I love more than being able to help someone. I am currently in charge of my schools’ contribution to the county’s Relay for Life event, and I have found how liberating it is to be able to make a difference in the lives of others. I think that the opportunity provided at the University of South Carolina-Upstate Honors College to serve and improve the

, Ignacio Sanchez, a student at Glynn Academy do not agree with students to complete 100 hours of community service in order to Graduate high school. In the following paragraphs I will explain why I do not agree with policy. One and most critical is the amount of time that it consumes and takes up! Time is one thing that is very valuable no matter who you are. 100 hours is equivalent to almost 4 whole days it might not seem much but if you are a very busy person it will be extremely difficult to accomplish this task or even impossible depending on who you are.…

In Serve or Fail, the author, Dave Eggers, brings up the point that community service should be required in colleges. According to Eggers, “college is too long-it should be three years-and even with a full course load and part-time jobs there are many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” He believes that with all of the free time that students have, they should do something productive and helpful like community service. Additionally, Eggers thinks that if colleges were to require community service, then it would not only improve their working environment, but it would also touch and improve each student. I would agree with Eggers because I have found out that when colleges require community service, it increase their students’ self-efficiency, boost their teamworking skills, and helps them find a sense of responsibility.…

The Honors College at Auburn is designed to challenge the students that have showed academic excellence in their high school careers. The college should help students think more openly about the problems in today’s world, and lets face it, they are numerous. With the help of professors, the students in the Honors college should be able to pinpoint the source of a particular problem as well as the solution. I am not saying that the students will change the world with their way of thinking, but the students will be taught perspective. This type of thinking can only be mimicked in a challenging environment with people who are pushing each other to be better.…

I believe there is a more evident ambiance of respect in the Honors Program because, like the students, the professors are highly motivated. Additionally, the Honors students want to be in a more academically challenging environment and the professors want to teach these students who are hungry for knowledge. Furthermore, the smaller classroom settings are ideal for my learning process. With the smaller settings, there are less distractions and more individual attention which makes a difficult topic easier to comprehend. Also, I plan to take advantage of the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities since I have been accepted to the College of Engineering.…

To be quite honest with myself, I really am not sure why I’m so intrigued to apply and be part of the honors program at DePaul University. As a Diversity Scholar I currently volunteer 10- 12 hours a year for the Department of Community Engagement and Multicultural center on campus. Yet, due to my demanding work schedule I am unable to participate in many other community service projects. However, if selected for the Shawn Carter foundation scholarship I plan to meet the 25hr/ of community service requirement by joining the Diversity Outreach Team, Volunteering at the Campus food pantry, and Participating in Alternative Spring break.
