I have lived in small towns for the duration of my life. Most everyone dresses the same way, talks the same way, behaves the same way, and everybody knows everybody. I am looking for a change. I want to be able to develop myself in a way that is professional, yet still uniquely “me.” It is difficult to stand out individually in a crowd that does the same things as you. I hope to be a part of a group that stands out because of the individual personalities that make it up. I think that I will make many new friends amongst the different people that I meet, but I will also be academically challenged by these people, as they will be on the same academic level that I am on. This way, I am getting the diversity that I want, while staying in familiar territory. My goal of individual development is sure to be met through an honors college …show more content…
Teaching styles vary amongst any classroom, though they vary more so in an honors classroom, simply because there is a larger variety of students. Because of this, I am hoping to learn new cultures and different things from the students that I will meet in an honors college. I feel that I can become more accepting of other peoples’ views and cultures if I am around those mature enough to explain them or defend them rationally. Some people just say that they believe something because they do, but offer no explanation of evidence that what they believe is true. I know that students within an honors college have an intelligence high enough to be able to defend their views, and this helps me to have a higher respect and understanding for those that are different from me. The honors college at the University of South Carolina-Upstate requires students to complete a minimum of 60 hours of community service. This is absolutely wonderful, as I feel that people grow tremendously while serving others. There is nothing I love more than being able to help someone. I am currently in charge of my schools’ contribution to the county’s Relay for Life event, and I have found how liberating it is to be able to make a difference in the lives of others. I think that the opportunity provided at the University of South Carolina-Upstate Honors College to serve and improve the
