The scene begins with an ominous foreshadowing effect. Odysseus’ men insisted that they should: “take the cheeses, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it” (151.243-44). The men have no desire to confront the cyclops and only want to take some of his goods and leave. A retrospective Odysseus (one must remember that the events of the story are not happening in real time; they are being told through Odysseus’ eyes) tells the reader: “Ah, how sound that was!…

Overnight, Odysseus comes up with the idea to tie them up to the undersides of the Cyclops’s rams. The following morning, the Cyclops lets his livestock out, and Odysseus and his crew manage to escape to their boat. Had Odysseus not come up with this idea, his crew and him would have been stuck in the Cyclops’s cave and likely killed by him. This excerpt is another example of how great Odysseus was as a…

"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" this is a quote from Gerard Way, a famous musician with an insightful viewpoint, regarding heroism. I think this quote represents heroism very simply, yet in the truest way. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, suggests that Odysseus is a hero. The speaker's purpose is to inform the audience of what true heroes are like and the traits that they may possess in order for them to understand that Odysseus is the ideal example of a hero, regardless of his flaws.…
