Honor Killings In Chronicle Of A Death Foretold

My understanding of the novel and it’s culture was able to improve through our discussion about honor killings. In this discussion we debated the aspects of honor killing in Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez and how they connect to other honor killings. We came to the conclusion that the honor killing depicted in the novel varies heavily from other cases and it connects many parts of their culture. I feel that this honor killing is extremely unique not only because of how different it was from other cases but also because it says a lot about their culture and social standing. The honor killing that is portrayed in the novel begin as it is believed that Santiago Nasar took the virginity of Angela Vicario. This begins to stand out as normally the women are killed by close family members although in this case Angela's brothers murder Santiago instead. This major difference is especially unique as Santiago is rich and this connects to the established social class as many did not believe that the twins would kill him for this reason. The social class is heavily emphasized as they are described as each character is described. Thus not understanding this culture can prove difficult for the reader as it is the motivation for people's actions and decisions.
