The poems hero Beowulf, demonstrates honor as well as bravery. As Beowulf heads to his fight against grandel he leaves behind his sword and armor stating that his opponent grendel “has no idea the arts of war, or shield or swordplay”(47) and chooses that there will not be any “weapons, therefore, for either this night”(47). This shows beowulf’s value of honor because he does not go into this battle against grendel unfairly, and using his knowledge of war and swordplay to his advantage. He chooses to go in fighting a fair fight against grendel. Although, beowulf is a reflection of the anglo-saxon’s value of honor, on the other hand grendel does not demonstrate this value as he chose to grab “thirty men from their resting places”(11).…

Honor is an essential part of the Greek hero archetype as demonstrated in Homer’s Iliad. Achilleus, Agamemnon, and Hektor all demonstrate varying levels of honor and glory throughout the first six books. Honor in Greek tradition is something that is won by fighting in battles or leading an army, but true honor is how a person uses that privilege to reveal their morals and virtue. Through these three character’s actions, Homer demonstrates how one can be honorable but not have true honor.…

Reputation is a key theme of the English poem Beowulf and is really important to the main character. Through the entire poem we see how important it is, even at an old age his reputation is everything to him and it’s all connected to him wanting to be the leader and warrior his dad was. Gail Ashton (writer of the Medieval English Romance in Context) said, “These stories only focus on family, kinship, marriage, lineage, and property, all social and political structures.” And it’s true in medieval texts; let’s take a closer look at two of the most used themes in medieval texts. Much Ado about Nothing, I believe one of the best comedies because of the combination of full-bodied humor and the dealings with more serious matters like honor, shame, and love. The comedy starts with the title utilizing a play on words, the comedic elements are strong with saucy interactions between characters and the ever so memorable “Dogberryism” to have a hearty belly laugh. However, it has its moments that become very real and very honest. It has the ability to make an audience or reader feel agitated because of a strong sense of anger, hatred and despair in the main characters. Furthermore, it is the thin line between comedy and tragedy that really attracts the attention of the audience and it gets them involved in the narrative as…

The concept of honor plays a large role in the way people interact with one another. Some conflicting views may cause conflict with others. Shakespeare's’ dramas and comedy showcase a wide range of character’s standpoints about honor and show how strongly affected they are by their opinions. In “Macbeth” Macbeth and Macduff show how people who honor different things may ruin each other's lives. After being persuaded by his wife to kill the king, Macbeth declares “I dare do all that may become a man; / Who dares do more is none” (1.7.50-52).…

One of the concepts Shakespeare explores in Much Ado About Nothing is that of the different natures of relationships. Throughout the play, Shakespeare sets up two distinct pairs of lovers, both exemplifying a different model of relationship. Shakespeare contrasts two ideals of relationships, one of which being a relationship of immediacy based on necessity and a need to fulfill social norms, and the other being a relationship that is based on genuine feelings of love that are cultivated slowly and thoughtfully over time. The conversation between Anthony, Leonato, Beatrice, and Hero in Act Two Scene One, regarding how Hero should respond to her impending proposal, contributes to this exploration of differing types of love by juxtaposing the nature of relationship that Anthony, Leonato, and Hero subscribe to with the differing ideal of relationship that Beatrice favors.…
