Honor In Antigone

“I am not afraid of the danger; if it means death, it will not be the worst of deaths- death without honor” (Sophocles). Although one must honor their country to the end, one must honor their family even more. As Sophocles mentions, if honoring one’s family brings death, so be it. No death will be worse than one not honored, especially by the sovereign, such as the death of Antigone’s brother, Polyneices. Polyneices was a military leader of Thebes, along with his brother Eteocles, of which both were killed in a battle against each other. Considering the fact that Eteocles had an honorable burial by the sovereign and Polyneices did not, Antigone was determined to give Polyneices the proper burial he deserved, even if it meant death for herself,
