Honor College Students Duties

Decent Essays
There are many challenges which students, especially those of us from The Honors College, face in living honorably. As students of The Honors College, we are given many responsibilities and duties. We are required to have rigorous and challenging curriculums along with becoming leaders within the communities we are part of and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by all of it and find it extremely difficult to keep up. This pressure could result in many considering some dishonorable ways, like cheating and plagiarizing, to help themselves deal with it all. These, however, are very short term and horrible ways to help yourself keep up with your responsibilities due to both, their dishonorable nature and their tendency to make things worse later on.

Furthermore, a revision of the Honor Code will not only limit cheating and plagiarizing, but it will ultimately prepare students for their future, with the understanding that breaking rules will end in a negative consequence. Students will evidently grow out of this habit and regain morals that will improve their honesty. The students at RVHS should be aware and constantly reminded that cheating and violating school rules will lead them to be rebellious, and dishonest people in the future who don’t value genuine qualities. With college as the next step of education students must learn that acts in violation of the code will not be tolerated and can end with the student being suspended or expelled (Source C). Moreover, these colleges and universities…

This can be seen through Aaron Bacall’s cartoon, satirically stating that "a spy cam can greatly improve the honor code" (Source A). Furthermore, with today’s technology, following the honor code is becoming more and more difficult for students to follow. According to Chris Kahn, the internet is full of information, making it an easy route to plagiarism (Source D). Many honor codes state “obligations” that an authority cannot control or provide evidence for, such as reporting/confronting a peer for cheating. Like many other students like Alyssa Vangelli, not only do they believe it is not the student’s responsibility, they also believe that it will cause a tense relationship between peers (Source B).…

As it is seen in the students’ responses at Lawrence Academy in Alyssa Vangelli, they said that they did “...not see it as their responsibility” when asked to report cheating (Source B). Another example are the Harvard students in the article about honor codes by Jennifer Dirmeyer and Alexander Cartwright who “...are skeptical that signing a piece of paper will suddenly cause a cheater to change their ways” (Source C). It can be later seen in Dirmeyer and Cartwright’s article that honor codes that are strictly enforced managed by students reduces cheating due to punishments and a social disapproval. Additionally, referring back to McCabe and Pavela’s article, “...the highest levels of cheating are usually found at colleges that have not engaged their students in active dialogue on the issue of academic dishonesty” (Source F). Evidently, maintaining an honor code within the school is proven to reduce…

When we are young and commit mistakes, it is easy to blame on parents, teachers, or siblings in order to mentally make ourselves feel better about our own fault. In college, I will not be able to blame anybody for missing registration to classes, or missing an important deadline. Taking full responsibility for my actions will give me a hard time in my college career, since I have never been completely by myself. However, without a doubt, acting responsibly is the quality that gives meaning to our lives and allows us to develop personality, establish profound relationships, and get an advantage in the labor market. Additionally, the only way to overcome the fear of taking responsibility of myself is to start realizing that things will change…

How would one come to a realization of the importance of honor if one never lives within its boundaries? How would one hold upon their own beliefs even while walking the lonely and forgotten path? How would one understand the importance of each action if one does not know its reaction? Take the feedback loop told in Source C. “ If a student enters a college with mostly cheater types,” Dirmeyer writes, “then the costs of cheating are low, and the benefits are high. Therefore, an honor code would not do anything to prevent this if that is the culture of the school, regardless of whether or not there is an established honor code, as documented in Source D. The University of Virginia has an honor code, which must be written on every assignment, but that did not change the attitudes of 157 students who were caught cheating. These students had copied anywhere between some of their early work to a third of somebody else’s work, all while promising to have not cheated.…

Honor codes are not as discussed as much as they need to be, but they also are not strong enough. Over forty-two percent of students are not aware of the punishments they will be given if they cheat (Sledge). This shows that schools are not discussing the consequences with their students. Informing the students of the consequences related to violating the honor code will help strengthen it in their minds, which would result in less cheating amongst students. Honor codes were originally very strong and carried very harsh punishments, but as they are implemented they are usually softened or weakened.…

There is a rising epidemic of students cheating their way through grade school and college. Scholars who have achieved the highest grades and have went to Ivy League schools admit to cheating. Simkin and Mcleod list reasons for college students cheating as opportunity, desire to succeed, small or non-existent penalties, lack of consequences from schools and professors, and the belief that they are not cheating because the infraction is so minute (2009). Cheating leads to various ramifications, not just on the students themselves but on society as a whole. Academic dishonesty is not a new concept; but, it is a growing concept.…
