Honor Code's Role In Promoting Integrity

Today, many schools and institutions have honor codes in place to help promote integrity. Integrity is extremely important and is commonly built up during a person’s childhood and early adulthood. As universities and schools are central to cultivating integrity as students attend the schools during their early adulthood and childhood, honor codes are completely necessary to help cultivate integrity and all schools should put one into place. Before considering an honor code’s role in promoting integrity, it is important to first understand integrity itself. Integrity is how strong a student’s character, morals, and ethics are. If everyone had integrity, that would make the world have an abundance of honesty, dependability, and generosity. These are important qualities that help prevent practices like theft, cheating, and irresponsibility that all could possibly harm other people, and, as such, show how important integrity is. Integrity is developed in a person’s childhood and early adulthood, just as they are attending school and university. As such, these institutions have a very dominant role in cultivating integrity. Also, many colleges and schools see an honor code as completely necessary since plagiarism has become so much of a problem; at University of Virginia in one spring, over 150 students were caught cheating “in the largest cheating scandal in memory” (Source D). Therefore, it is very clear that an honor code is also necessary to help prevent cheating in a culture where cheating has become common place.
