In numerous high schools, the honor code is a set of rules that students pledge to follow in order to establish integrity and trust between one another. However, these schools often receive opposition to these codes because of the lack of enforcement in them. Such results lead to cheating, plagiarizing, and other dishonest methods; these actions tend to aggravate other students, and the aftermath is a detrimental school setting. As a result, the honor code should be revised in order to make it more effective among students in their educational environment.

This is so that the competitive environment in Robert Vela -along with many other schools- due to the fixation over ranking does not become even more disadvantageous than it already has due to dishonest methods. When students are encouraged to report their peers, not only does it lessen the amount of cheating, but it also makes those caught cheating embarrassed of their actions. By being outed by their peers, these individuals may be discouraged to cheat in the future, having learned from their mistakes and realizing the seriousness of violating a code meant to bring security and trust within the school setting. The idea is to remind students of “what type of environment [they want] to live in” (Source B). Therefore, to further integrate the importance of an honor code, these students who are caught cheating should be made to write an essay about honesty and integrity, and explain why they are important values to have; this essay should serve to teach these students about why there is an honor code system in …show more content…
For students as well as schools, respect in the educational environment will be more present. By establishing an honor code that relies on student influence, many will begin to acknowledge the honor code system as an amenable factor in schools. Moreover, an honor code that is well established and student involved will result in those attending the schools to hold their peers in a higher regard since, with a revised honor code, they will have more faith in the integrity of others. A majority of students in high school desire to be perceived as an honest scholar, so with having trust in those around them, the entire school body will be more reputable. In addition, labels such as good student or cheater determine how hard students work; thus, students become more encouraged to challenge as well as think for themselves.
