Honor Code Research Paper

The honor code system is redundant. Students have to write it on every homework, tests, and quizzes. The honor code doesn’t stop cheating. I have noticed students at Bishop Snyder cheating and giving answers to homework. At my old school, my friends have gotten caught giving and taking answers from other people. So, the honor cod should be eliminated. I understand that people want to keep the honor code. People believe that schools have honor codes have less cheating than schools without honor codes. Donald L. McCabe writes, “Students with honor codes cheat less than their counterparts elsewhere do” (Cartwright and Dirmeyer par. 3). People say that the only reason students cheat is because it is the environment that they are in. Dirmeyer and Cartwright states, “If a student enters a college with mostly “cheater” types, not only are the costs of cheating very low, encouraging fellow “cheater” types to cheat, but the benefits of cheating are very high, encouraging even “honest” types to cheat” (Cartwright and Dirmeyer par. 9). But that is simply not the case. Students are going to cheat no matter what environment they are in. Students at University of Virginia have been caught cheating as well. Dirmeyer and Cartwright says, “The success of the honor code, then, depends on the the expectations that students have of their peers’ behavior” (Cartwright and Dirmeyer par. 10). If students don’t take their classes seriously or don’t think they can do well on a test usually cheat more than the students that know more.
