Importance Of Honor Code Essay

Honor Code Across the United States, countless high schools and college universities have the honor code at their institutions. According to Stanford University, the honor code is a statement that addresses issues such as cheating, stealing, and misrepresentation. These are instituted by a school or other institution in which its participants pledge. Honor codes are self-regulating, because under an honor code, students are required to turn in other students in violation of the code (Roberts). The honor code is an essential part of the education system, because all man has left is his honor. Schools need the honor code to experience fair and honest results, provide original thoughts and creativity in reports, and produce academic integrity. They are an effort to have honest and genuine adults go into their career fields with legitimate background knowledge.

Academic integrity means honesty and responsibility in scholarship (University of Illinois). Academic integrity is important because you must be the innovator of your work. Students must hold themselves accountable for the work they do, and what they learn. Without academic integrity, a student’s degree will be a lie, due to copying their work through college. The student will not have retained the knowledge they should have learned themselves in college. A student can have difficulty forming their own opinions and answers about real world problems due to cheating. Clearly they will not be able to function in the workplace as their diminished learning will cause lower productivity.
