A week later, my band director congratulated me on making principal oboe and handed me Maslanka's Symphony 7, with about 4 parts marked solo in bold letters. I was shocked and felt the same twinge in my stomach that I did before my audition. I knew that this was just the beginning of my journey and that I had a lot of hardwork left.
I immediately began practicing and had the solos down, except none of the reeds I was making were good enough. Then, the last week before the intensive rehearsals and concert, I managed to make 3 good reeds.

The minutes before the concert seemed to go by extremely fast and before I knew it, the concert was here. When it was time for my first and easiest solo, my heart beat was pounding in my head and I could feel the sweat dripping off my instrument's keys, but the warm smile from the conductor as my first note sang out put me at ease, and I played a good solo. The performance continued and soon it was time for the big, super exposed one that seemed to end the concert. I completely forgot about the audience and other distractions, and it was just me, my music, the conductor, and the rest of the band playing. Time seemed to slow down, and I put as much heart into the music as I could possibly manage. The music ended and we stood up. The audience gave our whole band a standing ovation and I felt the greatest feeling of
