Honor And Duty

There was a time when I experienced the relationship between honor and duty at the Citadel. It happened during second semester in my freshman year. I took a challenging engineering class. It was about coding using C++ computer language. I had experience about coding before because I took Computer Science as my minor. So, I did really well in that class. Most of the time, my friends in that class would ask me to help them doing their homework. I could not refuse because they were my classmates. So, I tried to help them as much as I could. Sometimes, I had to show them my code because it was really hard to explain without seeing a picture. I tried to explain it to them until they understood, and they could finish it on their own. The problem occurred when one of my friends …show more content…
It was really hard to me because I knew what would be the punishment of the honor violation. Also, I was in contract with the Royal Thai Army. I would lost this contract if I got expelled from this school. The first thing that came to my mind was I need to tell the professor what I had done all of those time. After class, I emailed him saying that I had helped some of my friends in the class, also including their names, and I always told them not to copy my code. I only showed the code to them when I could not explain a solution in words anymore. I also told my friends to explain this issue to the professor. I knew there was no other way to fix this problem except for telling the truth. I also believed that I did the right thing. I believed in my sense of honor that I helped my friends in the right way. I did not gave them the answers, so they could finish their works without learning anything. Instead, I taught them and showed them the way I solved the problems, so they understood the concepts and develop their own ways to solve those problems. That was why I was confident to tell him about what I had

At the Naval Academy, the Honor Concept is good always and everywhere. The Academy is a microcosm of the larger world; however, this microcosm shields us from many greater evils that exist, even if only in rare, exceptional cases, in the real world. I cannot think of a situation at the Academy in which lying, cheating, or stealing would be permissible. In my opinion, lying, cheating, and stealing are only acceptable in life or death situations. Certainly, many of us will break this at one point for a much smaller reason, such as helping a friend or trying to evade punishment, but those actions are failures in tests of integrity.…

The entire purpose of the honor code in any school, including ours, is based on the student populations’ integrity. This means that even when one is bystanding a bad behavior, that person would need to turn it in immediately. The students may have these strong moral principles, but do they have courage? To turn in a peer or maybe even friend can be hard to do when the confidentiality or one’s reputation is at stake.
