Honesty In Othello

2. a. Quote: “a man...of honesty and trust” (I.iii.223)

b. Analysis: Shakespeare litters instances of dramatic irony throughout his play, especially whenever someone labels Iago as “honest.” From an outsider’s perspective, it is almost unrealistic how every character is able to fall prey so easily to Iago’s ploys and tricks. Perhaps it is Othello’s honesty and trusting heart that ironically blinds him from the deceitful manners of Iago. Othello is portrayed as one who follows the regulations and expectations established by the society, thus it would make sense that he chooses to believe in the good of everybody. He is a well-respected and seemingly intelligent general, however, he falls for the facade that Iago has put up, successfully invoking

Analysis: Iago is illustrating an extremely misogynist opinion that is unsurprisingly echoed by the other male characters in the play. The lack of shock from the surrounding men when he professed his views on women proves that this deprecatory and degrading attitude towards them were common, and expected. Shakespeare writes this scene with such a casual atmosphere that readers can assume that this kind of anti-feministic talk is just another ordinary topic men nonchalantly talk about. In addition, Shakespeare idealizes that women are only worth their beauty and wealth, and in essence have no backbone. He believes that men of this time view all women as hussies and prostitutes, there to serve their every carnal need. This exemplifies the mid-Victorian belief that woman are incapable of doing anything useful. Shakespeare’s use of Iago’s belittling attitude towards women ultimately illustrates the disrespect women of the that age were forced to suffer through.
Act 2, Scene 2
This scene made me even more afraid for Othello because this proclamation was in his great honor and favor. Anytime Othello is praised by others, Iago has become even more angry, making his revenge plan even more savage. Because the Herald called him noble and valiant, Iago must feel as if that title should be his, not Othello’s.

In this specific soliloquy, Shakespeare utilizes the word “honesty” to help portray the type of man Iago isn't and the type of man Othello believes he is not. By letting himself be influenced by Iago's lies, Othello shows how being too trusting and putting your trust into someone you deem to be “of exceeding honesty” (3.3.263) can lead to you to your ruin. Because Othello is of trusting nature and he believes Iago to be an honest man it was easy for Iago to execute his plan and manipulate othello to create his own destruction. The etymology of the word “honesty” defines someone as being of "honorable position; propriety of behavior, good manners; virginity, chastity. "…
