On the surface Baldwin’s novel appears to be about sexuality, but the novel tackles a deeper issue. Baldwin takes a stance on finding oneself whether that be thought others or in moments of solitude. Geovanni is able to show David who he wants to become as well as warn him of what he could be. David faces an internal conflict discovering who he is independently from the people that surround him. Janet R. Jakobsen’s essay, Queers Are Like Jews, Aren’t They? Analogy and Alliance Politics, discusses in depth what it means to queer something and to do Jewish. Jakobsen explains the relationship between these two actions and encourages the process of “thinking through the possibilities of playing off multiple norms” (p 82). She is able to do this with the help of a reading by Stacy Wolf on Barbara Streisand’s queer performances. I will look closely at Jakobsen’s argument about Barbara Streisand’s nose and her decision not to change it, while also specifying Jakobsen’s interpretation of how Streisand differs from Sander Gilman’s account of “The Jewish Nose.”…

James Baldwin’s novel, Giovanni’s Room, contains subtle yet powerful messages about society and its effects on people. The novel follows the narrator, David, as he internally battles with his emotions over love, lust, and trust. David restricts himself from displaying his emotions outwardly thus keeping others from knowing how he truly feels. David’s internalized homophobia plays a role in his mental reasoning for abstaining from outwardly presenting emotions. Throughout the novel, David does not ever intentionally give his emotions away to those close to him.…

In the story “ The Rock Pile “ by James Baldwin it addresses the issue of violence in the community (Harlem) and inside their home, in which violence is one of the causes for PTSD in children. An example of how the symbol of the rock pile is violence is when said in the story, “ They fought on the rockpile. Sure-footed, dangerous, and reckless, they rushed each other and grappled on the heights, sometimes disappearing down the other side in a confusion of dust and screams and up-ended, flying feet.” This sentence shows how the rockpile is where all the fights in the community would take place and kids would see this as the norm because it was an everyday thing occurring in their community. It's important for everyone to be aware of PTSD, to…

People of today’s society, and even from one hundred years ago, have been victim of wanting to be “normal”, usual, and most important, accepted. This pattern can even be seen in things such as literature and the arts; characters in such things are either rejected or have rejected someone for the sole purpose of their own benefit. The theme depicted in the book To Kill A Mockingbird and the musical The Phantom of the Opera is the struggle for the individual to live openly in a society that has rejected his flawed existence. Some of the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird had very descriptive images of them that helped to support…

This emphasizes that despite David’s best efforts to bring meaning to his life through work, David’s life is an empty one. Over the course of the film, Susan forces David away from this dull setting and drags him on an adventure into the countryside, into a forest and eventually lands him in jail. As David physically moves farther away from the museum and into these more diverse surroundings, it shows that his worldview is expanding and broadening into something more meaningful, dwarfing his original work-centric. His life is no longer confined to the spaces of his museum exhibit. He has grown, and his past life no longer means as much to him now that his worldview has expanded past the bland walls of the museum.…

When thinking of religion there’s many things that come to mind. Religion is a very hard topic to understand because there is just so many questions and not too many answers to go along with the question. Religion can be judgemental; judging people’s sexuality, the way that others choose to live their lives, and making it seem that most things are wrong to do, but in the bible itself mentioned in Matthew 7: 1-2 “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you”.…

Throughout reading The Things They Carried, my understanding of particular literary theories has vastly increased. The main lenses in which my group used to interpret the novel was feminist, psychoanalytical, and postmodernism. During the first block, it was more difficult to determine which lens to look through, and a lot of thought had to be put in when reading the block as a whole. But, as the book progressed, I began to pick up on particular instances and immediately recognized which literary lens it belonged to. Therefore, during our groups reading of the block as a whole, it was much easier to read it through a specific lens.…

During the 1950s, Homosexuality was deemed a danger to society and social order, so much so that the Federal Bureau of Investigation kept a watch list of known gays and lesbians. In writing In Cold Blood, Truman Capote—an openly gay man—gives some evidence that the two men, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith, shared an intimacy beyond a simple friendship. Within the novel, Dick and Perry display very traditional male and female gender roles. Upon introducing Perry, he is seen with “a guitar, and two big boxes of books and maps and songs, poems and old letters” (Capote 25).…

The Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti is poem about a bond between two sisters, however the deeper meaning to this story is about the idea that being homosexual or having sex with someone of the same gender is not a bad thing. At the beginning of the poem, Laura gives the goblins a piece of her hair for a piece fruit. This transaction of a piece of her for something else is like the first time that you have sex in which you are giving away your virginity, a part of yourself, for the experience of sex.…
