The film directed and produced by David Thorpe, Do I Sound Gay? is a documentary that explores one’s voice for their sexuality. When Thorpe and his significant other broke up he decided that he wanted his voice to sound more masculine instead of the stereotypical gay tone. He consults in a speech therapist, named Susan Sankin and a vocal coach named Bob Corff who both provide him with exercises to reduce his feminine voice. He goes around and interviews his gay friends and celebrities like Tim Gunn, David Sedaris and George Takei about their voices and tries to find the answer to the question: is a gay voice natural or is it something learned?

Individuals especially pre teens and teenagers who classify themselves as a LGBT civilian should not be afraid to go to school because they are homosexual. I believe that bullying affects these teens to the point where they feeling like suicide is the only option they have. When they are not accepted by their peers they cannot relate to people of their own age. Yes, you can confine with your parents or a therapist but what a teen really wants is to be able to walk down the hallway and feel like they have nothing to worry about. I truly believe the underlying message in this film is that your voice does not identify who you are as a person. No matter how much you try to change whatever it is that bother you it is in your natural habitat to simply be you. No one or nothing can change …show more content…
People stigmatize the LGBT community because they consider it to be out of the norm. The film, Gen Silent mentions that people fought so hard to be accepted by society and now that some have accepted it some feel the urge to keep it a secret. A secret because they are afraid of being mistreated and isolated from love ones. Thorpe acceptance of his stereotypical gay voice made me feel like he was afraid because he did not sound manly enough to be accepted by another man. The film depicts the meaning behind a masculine tone by stating that gay men are gay because they want to be with a male therefore, what is the purpose of being gay if my partner is going to have a feminine tone. They want someone who is going to dominate a relationship with a manly tone and that was a negative aspect in Thorpe case. In conclusion Do I Sound Gay? gives a better understanding of what people in the LGBT community go through on a daily basis. Some may feel the need to convert and change the way they act and sound then we have the ones that are fully accepted and not afraid of their sexuality. Thorpe film taught me that with any insecurity one may face it always best to be connected to your self-being. His journey of self-discovery made him find himself and he quickly learned that he was not alone many other people wish they sounded

Individuals who dislike gays have the tendencies to verbally assault homosexuals and feel the need to make it clear that they do not agree with what you are. Walking around as a gay person is limiting. It will either make people not want to be around or interact with the gay individual. Or it will make people want to be their friend because they want to feel like they are a good person for accepting them because homosexuals are discriminated against. Simply being gay and it just being normal doesn’t occur too often.…

Laud Humphreys wanted to look at men having anonymous and instant sex in public toilets. The main reason for Laud Humphrey doing this research was to show just how much not only gays but also straight men would go just to meet up for sex and how society should be more accepting so they did not have to go to these levels. Humphrey can be seen as using queer theory for his research as he looked at how society was bias as straight men had a voice but gay men did not. (Macionis and Plummer 2012). Humphrey wanted to use a positivism approach and use methods such as observation and to interview the men to get the answers.…
