Homosexuality In Alfred Hitchcock's Film

Hitchcock’s film also invokes the homophobic categories of cold-war political discourse to secure the representation of Bruno as the emotionally unstable homosexual who threatens national security. This is clearly evident from his conversation with his mother when his mother points out his plan to blow up the White House. Of which Bruno says: “I was only kidding, Ma. Besides, what would the president say?” (qtd from the film). Bruno attempts to pervert Guy and then tries to implicate him when he refuses to abide by their agreement on the train. Camera tracks Guy when he walks toward the Jefferson Memorial with a police detective. When Guy suddenly turns his head and looks outside the frame the camera follows the direction of his gaze

When presented with the Labouchere Amendment in 1885, Queen Victoria refused to sign due to the references to lesbianism saying, “Women didn’t do such things”. It’s an entertaining story and yet, it’s a myth, one that began circulating in the 1970’s (“Background: Myth on Victorian and ban on Homosexuality”), and its popularity continues since it fits with the modern idea of prudish, sexually repressed Victorians. While we don’t know Queen Victoria’s views on homosexuality, we do know she had a happy, fulfilling sexual relationship with her husband and therein lies the dichotomy about the Victorian’s attitude to sexuality and gender, too reticent to speak about sexual matters in plain words and yet sexuality and gender roles was at the…

Clarence Darrow once stated that “there is no such crime as a crime of thought; there are only crimes of action.” As it is, crime is inevitable for a living person in the long run. Suppose, one drove into the red light at the traffic intersection or a student lit cigarette inside the school zone, both are accountable for crimes with the consequences. Crime is a crime for the action a person has committed, and the only difference is consequences depending on how big the crimes are. During the research, my purpose of the paper is to discuss on how Alfred Hitchcock presented his movie overlooking the known historical person for his crimes, Ed Gein.…

In Alfred Hitchcock’s film “The Birds,” the idea of feminism can be said to have a strong impact and importance throughout the film. This idea is brought out from Hitchcock’s depiction of the women in the film. It can be said that Hitchcock is against feminism from his metaphorical use of the bird attacks to punish the women for stepping into male realms. In the analysis of feminism among the female characters, I will use mainly the characters Melanie Daniels and Lydia Brennan since they are the main ones in showing a contrast relating to feminism. To make clear, feminism can be simply thought of as the idea of women being equal to men on social, political, and economic grounds.…
