Sexual orientation is often the main defining characteristic in the self-identity of LGBT individuals, largely due to heterosexist attitudes in society. Heterosexism is the belief in mainstream society that treats heterosexuality as the norm, and as a result discriminates or serves to oppress, both directly and indirectly, members of the LGBT community as well as anyone else who does not conform to binary gender roles or heterosexual orientation. Heterosexism is a key aspect of the conflict perspective on sexuality that explains the issue in terms of group versus group wherein the LGBT community wishes to have the same rights and abilities as heterosexual individuals and couples, but those in power (the straight majority) prevent them from doing so.
