Homosexuality was not accepted for a long time particularly due to religious views which had an impact on everyday society’s beliefs. Passages in the Old Testament in the Christian Bible would imply that homosexuality should not to be tolerated. Society then began to have a completely judgemental opinion of homosexuals, and needed to come up with an excuse for why they were different. Doctors believed that there was error with their brain; therefore it was a mental illness.
Curing homosexuality with aversion therapy was an extreme and torturous treatment. This was especially demonstrated in the therapy environment itself. In the case of Peter Price, a 19 year old boy who was instructed by his mother to get cured, was forced to lay in his urine, poo and vomit and required to look at pictures of naked men (Tatchell, 1997). Doctors then injected him with the nausea-inducing drug Apomorphine and forced him to listen to tapes that would ridicule and insulted his sexual orientation. The goal one method of shock therapy was to change the way homosexuals see the same sex by associating their “wrong” sexual thoughts, with pain. This was done by strapping the homosexual patient to a chair and attaching electrodes to them. Next they would start showing the patient a mixture of stimulating slides and neutral slides (Scot, 2013).No shocks would be delivered when the slides were neutral but were delivered when stimulating erotic scenes were being displayed. This method was used on Colin Fox, a 19 year old boy who feared imprisonment and judgement due to his sexuality. Colin, currently 51, continued on to be a homosexual and stated that the pain only did short-term
