Violent homophobia in Russia is a pervasive problem that continues today. Despite the fact that the ban on “homosexual relations” was repealed over two decades ago, there has been a huge push to bring that law back. As well as this, there has been a huge surge in anti-gay rhetoric in recent years. A famous Russian actor, Ivan Okhlobystin, advocated for a gay holocaust and said: "I would shove them all [gay people] alive in the oven. It's Sodom and Gomorrah. I'm a believer and can't be indifferent to it, it's a live danger to my children’ (“Vladimir”).” Okhlobystin’s comment is especially relevant, as well as offensive, because of the situation in Chechnya today.
