Homo Sapiens Sapiens: Early Modern Human / Cro-Magnon Man

Entry #1:

Squat down on the ground, the sun beating down on me, I wipe a droplet of sweat out of my eye. The bare ground comforted me. My eyelids start to twitch, mouth watering with drool. Just closing my eyes for a minute and… “RAA!” a cry goes out in the distance. I jolt awake, heart beating fast, and squint to see the farthest I can in every direction my head can turn. But all my eyesight could hold was yellow from too much light. So somehow, I follow the sound. Running as fast as my legs could withstand, I drop to the floor and crouch onto my knees. In front of me, were the elders standing proud and tall, liquid ochre running down their bodies. Tightly gripped in their hands

Only about 25% of the country of Darwin is electrified. For those who are not on the electric grid, lighting is primarily done by kerosene lamps and homemade candles. Kerosene fuel can cost as much as 50 cents a night, a substantial amount of money considering most Haitians only make about 2 dollars a day. Besides cost, kerosene also has many negative health risks, specifically harmful fumes and the risk of broken glass and fire. Due to these factors, many Haitians do not have much if any space lighting in their homes at night.…

We all have an inner caveman. The vast majority of us just don't realize it and that the healthiest diet is the oldest one. An inner caveman who's craving foods he ate during the prehistoric era. It probably contradicts all your stereotypes, but the prehistoric man who lived before the advent of agriculture was, in many ways, an extremely fit, athletic person.…

I chose the book The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature by Matt Ridley because I have always been fascinated by how our culture views sex and how it has had an effect on our evolution. The author discusses how the biological factors of sexual selection has affected human psychology. You probably remember the Red Queen hypothesis from recently. From Through the Looking Glass, Alice meets the Red Queen who is constantly running just to stay in one place and not fall behind.…

Every day I learn something new, whether that is something about myself or the people around me… But moreover, I have learned a great deal as to how us humans have changed over the years including interacting physically, mentally, and socially. Apart of this learning more about our society has come from taking anthropology I say because what makes us who we are today was what originated thousands of years ago. Like humans, they needed resources in order to fulfill their lifestyles. Neanderthals are very much comparable to us humans physically, mentally, and socially.…

Homo Neanderthalensis: Understanding Its Species and Importance in Human Evolution Homo neanderthalensis, more commonly known as Neandertals, are the closest extinct relative of the genus species Homo sapiens. Homo neanderthalensis lived approximately 30,000 to 125,000 years ago, populating regions of Europe and southwestern Asia. In 1856, near Dusseldorf, Germany, the very first Homo neanderthalensis remains were found in a cave in the Neander Valley, pronounced Neander Tal in old German), thus resulting in the name Neandertal. The genus Homo neanderthalensis quickly became extinct subsequent to the rise of Homo sapiens, leading to the unceasing argument that Neandertals were in fact an inferior species in the human evolution timeline (Haviland,…

    Homo Sapiens: Gravettian

Gravettians are the homo sapiens that lived around 29,000 to 22, 000 B.C. (I don't add the E. because of the added cost). Their home base started in France and spread throughout Europe, and during that time period the area mainly consisted of grassy fields containing many beasts roaming around eating the grass, including the woolly mammoth. They invented a few useful tools and ideas during their brief time on earth, and the one I'm most thankful for is sewing, using a needle and thread (most likely sinew) to create clothes for warmth, but they also created clothes for style which were covered in beads, as seen in the picture below.…

Evolutionary Relationships of Hominin Species In the study of human evolution, the timeframe that a specific species appeared and lived is a very important aspect to better understand how modern-day humans developed. The oldest of the species in the chart above is Australopithecus afarensis. Australopithecus afarensis appeared roughly 3.85 - 2.95 million years ago; while it more closely resembled an ape, the evolutionary development into modern humans was beginning. Australopithecus afarensis had more humanlike teeth, the canines were smaller than those found in modern apes and the jaw shape was somewhere between the rectangular shape found in apes and the parabolic shape found in humans.…

There have been multiple species that have roamed the very Earth we roam today. Two of which are the Neanderthal species, that has gone extinct, and the Homo sapiens species, which happens to be a species that is still present in this day and age. The Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens species are two species that can both be very distinct, but can also be very similar when it comes time to compare and contrast the two. Not only are there obvious physical differences/similarities among both, but there are also mental. You’d be surprise to see how much our species is so closely alike to an alternate one.…

The study of the evolution of human beings often presents many challenges. One of the main challenges is the limited evidence and the constant emergence of new forms of evidence. From time to time, scientists encounter the challenge of naming the fossils and putting them into their appropriate species. In this paper, I am going to discuss the Homo erectus, Homo Heidelbergensis, and Archaic Homo sapiens. The paper will make comparative analyses of the individual species and point out why I believe they deserve to be categorized as distinct species instead of a one species that has different characteristics due to geographical differences.…

I opened my eyes slowly, groaning when my vision was immediately met with blinding bright light. As much as I longed to pull my wing over my eyes and go back to sleep, I had to return to the Edge. I was frequently absent from my herd and tended to spend more time in fields and meadows, contemplating my life choices. One of those choices was joining the Edge, and making a commitment to it's protectors. With this in mind, I reluctantly arose from my resting spot.…
