Fifteen million students in the United States high school system are faced with a growing epidemic that is creating large amounts of stress and is taking away from the education of students. On average, students in the educational system receive three hours or more per night and even more work over the weekends. However, the academic success fails to show any substantial direct correlation with homework. Many teachers give out assignments, not for the overall academic, but instead to create extra grades in the system. As a result of this educational issue, students have began to do their work in order to maintain grades instead of doing it to gain knowledge. As a result, students lose their opportunity to establish friendships, good character traits, and learn a wide range of skills. In the article “Are You Done with or Down with Homework?” the author points out a story of a mother by explaining’ “She remembered him getting two to four hours of homework a night, plus weekend and vacation projects. He was overwhelmed and struggled to finish assignments… ‘Ultimately, we felt compelled to have Bobby quit karate - he’s a black belt - to allow more time for homework” (Hough 5). Bobby is only one example of the many that have had to quit an activity that they love in order to spend more time with their school work. By taking these kids out of their favorite activities they are losing key skills and relationships that could be beneficial to them later on in life. In addition, it is showing these students that when life gets busy quitting things they love is the answer. While quitting activities is helpful in situations like this, students should always be forced to give up what they love. With limited homework students would not have to be faced with these hard
