After asking a wide range of teachers how many hours they assign to high schoolers on average each week many of them said three hours, well for students that study five days a week that’s an average of forty-two minutes per class each day. After interviewing the science teacher in Brady who has been teaching for the last 15 years he simply responded, “no I don’t think I assign a lot of work, but my students may disagree. I usually assign homework twice a week and it roughly takes an hour to complete. I try to avoid assigning any homework on Wednesday’s so that students can go to youth group and spend some time with their families.” (Brownawell) A senior at Brady was asked how long do you think you spend on homework a night? “I believe I spend a solid two and a half hours on homework a night.” (Simmons) Teachers also gave three different reasons for assigning homework such as making sure that all students understand the lessons completely, to help students develop essential problem-solving skills, and also so their parents feel involved and understand what their children are learning. Finding this statement correct, yes teachers have every right to go home and enjoy themselves, but students have spent the same amount of time at the school. In fact, teachers are allowed to go home and enjoy themselves, but why aren’t students allowed to partake in the same activities. I don’t ask for help and they usually don’t check to see what we’ve been doing as long as I keep my grades up.” He also stated that between football practice and homework he has not been able to visit with his friends much.
