Homework is harmful to students because it causes stress, lack of socialization, and grades will drop when the assignment is not explained. Considering the fact that most students participate in either sports, clubs or jobs, homework can affect the amount of time a student has to practice. When too much homework is assigned many students cannot attend whatever activity they are participating in because of their homework. If homework was not such a huge problem than many other parts of children’s lives would be getting completed. According to the article “Student Perspective on Homework”, Part-time jobs or babysitting siblings may interfere with the student's ability to complete their assignments. Extracurricular activities such as soccer, basketball, or football, may end late at night sending students home tired and unmotivated to complete their assigned homework tasks (Wilson). With homework getting in the way of sports and other activities, it can cause frustration and kids staying up late. Not only does homework affect activities, but it can affect time students spend with their families and the amount of sleep they are really getting. Most of the time students are not turning in their homework is because they do not understand the topic. The only reason some students are failing is because of unclear assignments. Teachers must take time to explain to their students about what their homework assignment is and how to complete it. Another paragraph in “Student Perspectives on Homework” explains, In summary, although teachers continue to assign homework when some students fail to turn it in, there are justifiable reasons why they continue to require the completion of such tasks. Some researchers and entities say that teachers assign too much homework, that the teacher's expectations or directions are unclear, and that the teacher gives the students too many handouts. They also state that homework assignments do not involve family interaction or creativity and that this could be a major reason why a lot of the work does not get done. (Wilson) As more and more homework is assigned more and more students start to fail, and teachers still hand out the same amount of homework. Another reason is that not everyone treats their education the same way. Every student is different, and the way they treat their education is also different. Many students today want to get away from school as soon as possible in order to get home. As they grow up they must be more aware of what needs to get done.
