“Available international data indicates that there is no clear-cut evidence that increased homework leads to improved test scores” (Penn). Unfortunately, elementary, middle, and high schools across America disagree. Some school districts think the more homework, the better test scores will be, however, that is not the case. Most students struggle with the large workload given to them to complete at home. Homework is harmful to students. Homework is harmful to student because it affects their physical health. Having too much homework can cause students to become sleep deprived. Students who have an enormous amount of homework on top of seven hours of school tend to get stressed out. According to an article, “Opponents of homework contend that requiring students to labor 10 to 12 hours a day diminishes appreciation for learning, tires students, discourages creativity, and leads to over-stressed and fatigued young Americans” (“Homework: Is homework beneficial”). This quote shows homework can discourage students’ motivation to learn. Most students do not enjoy learning in their environment because homework takes the fun out of their education. Some students feel as though homework has reduced their desire to learn. Students say they cannot wait to go to college where the learning community is fun (Ponte). When students are not having fun, they are stressing about their schoolwork, putting a strain on their learning ability. Once homework is taken away, students enjoy learning more. According to Christine Hendricks, a principal at Glenrock’s Grant Elementary school, "’Parents say their kids enjoy reading again because there's no pressure. In fact, there have been no negative effects whatsoever. And there's much less stress at our house, too’" (Ponte). This quote shows once homework was taken away at their school, students became more motivated to learn.
