Too much homework can make a student nervous and stressed out, which can affect some students more than others. Stress can lead to many other health concerns such as constant headaches and sleep deprivation. The negative affects put on a student’s health can also play a role in the negative attitude students have about going to school. Going to school should be enjoyable for elementary students and make them want to learn more; it should feed the students curiosity. But sometimes that is not the case, “kids who are faced with homework overload tend to take the viewpoint that learning is a burden rather than something fun” (Staff). School is a place to get young students engaged and want to continue in school. If a student is facing problems with too much homework in elementary school, they will know it will be the same as they further their education. According to Diane Ravitch, a research professor of education, “the anti-homework crusade will take us to a time when students read no books, write no essays, and complete no research projects other than whatever can be fit into the school day.” Time spent out of school, is time that needs to be spent finishing work that cannot be fit into the school day. Since the typical homework assignments include reading pages in a book or writings, if these extra assignments are taken away, this takes away the student’s privilege to get engaged in what is going on in class. Some students need the extra practice, as well. Those students that need extra practice may have a different way of learning. The repetition that comes with homework assignments can help them learn and understand a subject better. This extra practice also teaches students at a young age about time management. Students have to learn how to work with their schedules at home so that they have time to do their homework.
