Warning: Homework May Be Hazardous to Your Health Submitted to NY Times
August 16, 2016. A day that had been calendered by thousands across the local area. Some were excited, some nervous and some had a feeling of dread.This day marked the first day of school for the Poway Unified School District. This starts a trend of long nights of foolish amounts of homework assignments. Now the limits to family time and free time are dramatically altered all for the sake of supposed student growth. The little known secret is there are no real studies proving that large amounts of homework benefits the student enough to compensate for what is lost in sacrificing critical parts of their childhood.

Many articles were written on the problems of too much homework and these articles began to get public attention. In January 1999, Time magazine 's cover story, "The Homework That Ate My Family" (Ratnesar), generated considerable media buzz. The article also mentioned a University of Michigan study showing how homework for 6- to 8-year-olds had increased by more than 50 percent from 1981 to 1997. (Ratnesar) The shifts from decade to decade went back and forth but for the first time the debate was taken on a very national level and was even used as a culprit for ADD, eyestrain, stress, lack of sleep etc. A Stanford researcher found that students in who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance and even alienation from society. A recent media buzz happened when a second grade teacher’s no-homework policy went viral, thanks to a student 's mother posting about it on social media. "After much research this summer, I 'm trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year" (Young). She also spoke about what should happen after school like, eating dinner as a family, reading together, playing outside and getting children to bed
