Homework, a popular pedagogical strategy, has recently become a topic of debate throughout the education system and homes of students, especially those in elementary and intermediate school. Homework has always been prevalent within teaching, educators have taken measures to make it seem more appealing, but homework has become out-dated and ineffective within the current school curriculum. According to Kohn, “there has been no evidence of any academic benefit from assigning homework in elementary or middle school. For younger students, in fact, there isn’t even a correlation between whether children do homework (or how much they do) and any meaningful measure of achievement.” Due to this evidence, many schools across the nation have begun to reconsider the benefits of homework, which has led them to completely eliminate it from the school curriculum. More Phoenix elementary schools should institute the “No Homework” policy since homework no longer acts as an effective teaching strategy. Homework interferes with a student’s social time with family and friends, causes premature stress, and is not an effective indicator of a child’s intelligence.
The concept of homework was intended to help students practice and demonstrate skills and knowledge that were taught in class, as well as prepare them for future classes and assignments. As the world evolves, so does the education system and curriculum, so what was once 30 minutes of review or note taking, has now become vigorous…
