Personal Narrative-Awkwardness In Middle School

I walked through the hallways of my middle school, listening to the garbled conversations around me. I wondered why people were only “together” one day, what this new term, gay, meant, and why OneDirection was so important. Awkward silences, gasps of disbelief, and grudging explanations often followed my inevitable queries of “What does that mean?” I had difficulty understanding how people interacted at first, and found myself listening from the outside to learn different things for later use. I still struggle with the fact that socialization is just as important as homework, for it has only been in the last two years I have built up the confidence to feel accepted, and put school to the side so that I don’t become a hermit. Obviously I am not able to learn everything there is to know in cultural norms, or in scientific facts, but transitioning from isolation into a building of strict rules, capricious values, and loud judgment was quite the ordeal. Homeschool was, for me, a time self-regulated work and reading or playing in silence. So …show more content…
One was that mom and I rarely endeavored to leave the house for social reasons. I would teach myself with an online curriculum, and occasionally join my two friends on a “playdate,” but that is nothing compared to the continual crowds and communication seen in school, collectively. The sheer number of people nearby intimidated me at first, and sometimes still does, indicating how unprepared I was for public school in general. I had to train myself to navigate the halls, and engage in polite conversation with strangers when necessary. My difficulty with that demonstrated itself to me almost daily, with incessant nervousness and what I’m sure is a terrified expression. It has taken me a few years to adjust and assume a semblance of relaxation in the hallways, though interacting with people is rather baffling at times, in regards to popular

Middle School Mid-Life Crisis Middle school, a time of cringe worthy moments and regret. I like to refer to this story as my “Middle School Mid-Life Crisis”, since I questioned the purpose of going to school almost every day, and never felt motivated to do anything. Dreading almost every day of school, not having stable mental, emotional, or physical health, and feeling dissatisfied with myself as a student. My mind set was always on countdown mode, “I just have to make it through this class period. I only have 20 more problems to do.”…

“Don’t forget, the paper is due next Wednesday!” My 8th period teacher, Mrs. Oakford told to my class and I as we streamed out of the cramped classroom on a Friday. We couldn’t wait to bust out of the schools doors and claim our prize of a short freedom for surviving another busy, exhausting, and slow week of middle school. I rushed to my locker, grabbed everything I would need for the homework due Monday, threw it in my bag and headed down the hall collecting my friends to walk to town to start what I would hope would be a slow but fun weekend off The weekend went quicker than I wished and before I knew it, it was late Sunday night and I still hadn’t done my homework, I realized this and got to work.…

Prior to middle school, I thought I was satisfied with my position. I had friends, got along with my teachers, excelled in sports, and got decent grades in my classes. Back then, I thought this well-roundedness I sought between these necessities would offer me self-satisfaction. Little did I know, however, that I was going to confront this well-rounded nature of mine during my first awards ceremony in middle school. Among the most intelligent, artistic or athletic of the students present there, I was the one of the few who simply struggled to stand out.…

I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

Thinking back on my education, I’m so blessed to have the background I do. Aside from preschool and kindergarten, homeschooling has been the basis for my learning experience. Beginning in first grade and continuing all the way through eighth grade, I would consider the schooling I had to fall under the Middle Class teaching style with an occasional affluent aspect here and there. I then began my high school years in a much more Affluent Professional and Executive Elite based schooling though a system called Classical Conversation. Both schooling styles, though different in many major ways, consisted of a basic fundamental that was a key element in my education.…
