Homeschooling: Moving To The United States

Improved Essays
I have been homeschooled since I was in 11th grade. There are several reasons why my parents and I decided to put me in homeschooling.

In 2015, we moved to the United States because of a business opportunity from a family friend. We stayed there for a year and a half. During that time, I also went to highschool in Texas. However, we had to go back to the Philippines in November 2016, and that meant I had to drop from my high school and restart my junior year.

In the Philippines, students go through 6 years of high school: junior high. The first level of high school is called junior high school, and it encompasses Grades 7-10. This is more general, and prepares students for the next level of high school: senior high school. To enter senior high school, one must prove completion of junior high school, and it involves 2 years of high school before college. In senior high, students choose a track to take such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences), or Music. When we arrived in the Philippines, my parents tried to put me to 11th grade, but they were unable to do so since we had to present a proof of graduation. Apart from that, school has already started in the Philippines, with some already starting their second semesters. This left us with no choice but to go through 11th grade through homeschooling. We chose to continue it because we had to go through 11th grade in the Philippine curriculum- something that I am unable to do.

Well-Known intellectual, Malcolm Gladwell, in chapter 9 of his book Outliers, addresses the topic of the “achievement gap” and argues that summer vacation is very harmful for the educational career of a lower class children and they need to “shed” part of their culture to help them succeed academically. I agree with Gladwell’s theory, sometimes you have to let go of the old this to succeed in the new. In the beginning of chapter 9 Gladwell speaks about a school named KIPP, which stands for Knowledge is Power program. KIPP is a experimental middle like no other.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

Homeschooling, also known as home education, involves the education of children at home instead of receiving education at a traditional private or public school. According to Bauman (2011), many students are schooled at home and the number in the United States is growing at 15 to 20 percent per year. It is a system in which parents prefer their children to be educated at home and argue that it is more beneficial for them. There are those who advocate homeschooling, while there are some skeptics about homeschooling as well. Homeschooling is becoming very popular and many see it as being a bad idea due to the fact that teachers in traditional schools are better qualified due to years of training, the child’s socialization skills will be negatively…

Education: Which method is better? One of the biggest decisions a parent has to make for their child is what method of education will benefit their child the most. Some parents think that their child will learn the most if they teach them themselves, but other parents are either working, or know that they do not have the ability to teach their child. Because students spend a good amount of time in school, it is extremely important for parents to choose a method of education that fits their child best.…

Homeschooling a child or not is completely up to the parent. Many factors play into the decision whether to homeschool the child or not, but it is a decision that can possibly change the view of the child’s perception of social interactions and learning strategies as they get older. Considering homeschool is a completely different environment than a public/private school classroom, the parent does not have the proper requirements to be the teacher that otherwise qualified teachers would be able to offer. I don’t think parents should homeschool their children because there are teachers who are more qualified to actually teach children. Parents teach their children heritage, family values and morals, not math and science.…
