The Cost Of Homeschooling In The US

Homeschooling is the education of children at home by their parents. Homeschooling has grown greatly since the early 2000s, so much so that 1,770,000 students are homeschooled in the United States today—which is 3.4% of the school-age population (HSLDA). The National Center for Education Statistics says that children who are homeschooled are 68% white, 15% Hispanic, 8% black, and 4% Asian or Pacific Islander. Also, 35.9% of families that homeschool have four to six kids, %25.3% have seven or more, and the rest have one to three children. The costs of homeschooling can be expensive for families with more than two children. There are many social and academic reasons to why parents have been deciding to homeschool their children. A popular reason in California, and many other states, is because many parents do not want their children to be vaccinated. The definition of socialization is the process by which a human being beginning at infancy acquires the habits, beliefs, and accumulated knowledge of society through education and training for adult status (Webster). The key word is through education—and yes homeschoolers get a fine education, but they do not get the full impact that public or private school children get. Though homeschoolers can join extracurricular activities, there are only twenty-four states that require all public schools to allow homeschoolers to have access to classes and or sports (HSLDA). The states that do not have this law for homeschoolers, the public schools determine whether they will allow it or not—but most do not allow homeschoolers which makes it hard for them to join sports, or different music or art classes.
