Attributes of a Hero
Many traits make up a hero such as humility and bravery. Many heroes have these traits, but some do not. For example, Odysseus is very prideful which makes him be less of a hero although he is very brave and has many other heroic traits. Another example of a brave hero is Superman. He goes towards danger and tries to stop it. A hero is a person who is brave and humble.
A hero must be brave. Being brave is possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous endurance. Odysseus goes on a journey to get back to Ithaca and faces many obstacles where he shows bravery. If Odysseus was humble, he could have returned home years before he did. Odysseus was on his journey for many more years because he did not have this trait. For example, when he was leaving the Island of Cyclops his pride got in the way and caused him to be thrown back to the cyclops’s island. Odysseus successfully blinded Polyphemus and got out of the cave, but while he was leaving he wanted credit for what he did so he told Polyphemus who he was. The text supports by saying: “If ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!” (Homer, Od. 9.502-505). He could have returned to Ithaca years before he did, but by hurting the son of the god of sea, Poseidon, his journey back was messed up. On the other hand, a hero that is humble is Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Belle’s father, Maurice, gets taken as a prisoner by the Beast because he took a rose. Belle tries to make the Beast let her father go, but puts her father before her and takes is place. In the movie this is shown with: “‘But he[Maurice] could die. Please, I'll[Belle] do anything!’ ‘There's nothing you can do. He's my[Beast] prisoner.’ ‘Oh, there must be some way I[Belle] can...wait! Take me, instead!’” (Woolverton).
