Homeroom Observation

A typical day at the Angevine IHAD program consists of the students starting in their homeroom. In their homerooms, they write down what they have to do for the day and Kate checks off their plan. There were seven students in Kate’s homeroom today. After planner checks, we head to flex time, which is after-school recess. The seven students, Kate, and I returned to the homeroom after flex time to begin academic time.
Today, the students all took their seats. Taylor* and Eric* sat near each other in the front of the room and were giggling,
Kate went over to the students and said, “Please get out your work.”
Taylor laughed and said, “But Miss, I do not have my work.”
Kate responded, “Where can you get your work?”
Taylor smiled and said, “In my backpack.”

I smiled at him and said, “Oh! That makes so much sense. Good job for figuring that out.”

[James says this a lot. He says he doesn’t know how to do problems, but in most cases he solves them correctly with little to no support.]
Before we could talk about the graphing problem, Kate stood up from working with Mike and said,
“Dreamers is almost over for the day. Can I get a raise of hands of how many of you want to play knockout (basketball game) for homeroom bonding today?”

Mike, Eric, Mia and Michelle raised the hands. Taylor and Jesses whispered to each other. James was looking out the window and smiling. She continued, “If you do not want to go outside, you can go to Jenny*’s homeroom.”
I asked James if he wanted to go outside.
James said, “No.”
I asked him, “Ok, let’s go to Jenny’s room and finish this

In 2008, all of the female first graders, and probably even a few of the male first graders, had a crush on the same seven year-old kid (for his sake and mine I'm going to change his name to John Smith). In the years to follow, the entire elementary school would have heard of and, of course, fallen for John Smith.
