In the epic poem The Illiad by Homer, Hector, the greatest Trojan warrior and prince of troy reflects the qualities of Homeric Heroes who lived based on criteria set by the Homeric Code.
One of the main duties of a Homeric Hero based on the Homeric Code is to fight for one’s homeland. The Apollonian Guard, a land force of the Trojans, was led by Hector. Before, Achilles and the Mermadons attack the beach of Troy Hector gives the Apollonian guard a pep talk. In this speech Hector says, “Honor gods, love your woman, [and] defend your country. Troy is mother to us all- fight for her.” This shows what was considered important and what should be fought for. A hero’s family was a reflection of themselves. In Hector’s case his son would be a reflection of him long after he was gone. Hector says, “[about his baby son] I want to see him grow tall. I want to see all the girls chasing after him." A man considered to be a Homeric Hero in Troy would be judged on his "courage, physical abilities, [and] social status", along with symbols of honor they received such as: "captive women." Hector wanted to see his son grow up to be the ideal Trojan hero. If his son grew up to be the definition of a Homeric hero, Hector would be considered a honorable man. If his son did not grow up to be the ideal hero then Hector and his son would be looked at as failures, which would be considered "death and elimination from the competition for honor." This quote shows a feeling, typical in Homeric heroes who followed the Homeric Code. Hector cared about what his child turned out to be. When one person in a family did something the Trojan people did not look at as honorable the entire family was shamed.
