All my life I grew up knowing that I was born in another country, but I never thought of it as a negative factor to who I was. I started to become more aware of my own race as I grew up. I specifically remember 7th grade Humanities when we had started reading a book, American Born Chinese. In the book, it showed many racial stereotypes that were directed toward Asians. Throughout that unit, I became much more aware of how people could have seen me, which made me feel like I was associated with the name of the race and that was a bad thing. I know what it’s like to have racial comments directed at me, and it’s not a good feeling, because when comments are made like that it’s never made to boost yourself esteem, it’s really a intensional mean act that is meant to put you down. I will never be able to change who I am and even though I’m still very sensitive when someone mentions my race or the many people who are like me, I’m not as hurt by it because I’m different and unique and I am happy to be who I am. Looking back in Plessy’s shoes I still can’t imagine how dreadful it must have
