In this lab we wanted to identify what the four mystery liquids were using density and their characteristic properties. We were initially given four liquids that were labelled numbers 1- 4, some graduated cylinders, and a scale, but we also knew that the 4 liquids were ethanol, vegetable oil, water, and cyclohexane. Using the mass that we found when we measured the liquid and using only 10 mL of the liquids we were able to calculate the density and easily identify the liquids and see if they matched the guesses we had made initially. Our results do confirm our hypothesis that you could identify liquids if you have their densities.…

Have you ever wonder why, if you drop a gummy bear in water, why does it grow? Well here you will find the answer to that. First of all gummy bears are made up of a sugary solution that has gelatin in it which holds solutions together to make gummy candy and the gelatin needs water to hold the solution together and the companies that make the gummy have to extract the water so the gummies can get denser and get smaller so that is why later when you put water in the gummy bear or any other candy it will expand. This experiment is sometimes called osmosis, osmosis is when something swells up to several times it size. Also when a gummy bear is grown in water it will become way less dense, the density is how there is more weight to a smaller…

To answer this question, we used paper chromatography to identify the dyes in blue, orange, and green Skittles Sweets and Sours candy and Crayola Washable Markers. In this paper chromatography experiment, the mixture to be separated was spotted 1.5 centimeters from the bottom of chromatography paper, which was then dipped in the solvent, a 0.1 percent salt solution. The solvent then moved up the filter paper via capillary action and carried the mixture's pigments with it (Rosen and Gothard, 2010). Each pigment has a unique retention factor or Rf, a ratio between how far a pigment travels to the distance…
