Homelessness Unit Analysis

Decent Essays
Before this unit I thought that the majority of homeless people have a mental illness and now I think that the cause of homelessness is also caused by natural disasters, lack of affordable housing, unemployment, and many more cases. The teenager living in Las Vegas whose mother left him in Storied Streets was the most impactful part about my learning in the homelessness unit. When I was listening to his story, I realized that not only adults become homeless, but minors, a few years older than us, can come to be homeless. The thought that a teenager was living in their own school was difficult to comprehend. I want to learn why the population for homeless children has been increasing while homelessness for adult population has been decreasing

Multiple Perspectives There are multiple perspectives with being homeless in Americas. Often the homeless are stigmatized and a multidimensional scaling analysis reported by Cuddy, Fiske, & Glick (2008) reports, the stigma associated with the homeless is due to traits the homeless are perceived to have to include, "insignificance, dishonesty, irresponsibility, a lack of intelligence, as well as a cluster of other negative attributes" (Boster et al., 2016, p. 1294). The stigma often associated with being homeless is defined by Goffman (1963, p.3) as "an attribute that is deeply discrediting" (Boster et al., 2016, p. 1294). Being homeless in America carries a negative connotation that is not easily dismissed and some view homelessness from the perspective or morality.…

Personal views towards the world and issues like homelessness are shaped throughout one's life by social influences and personal experiences. These views are personal and not set in stone, they are open for changes by new information and experiences. I mainly focused on the causes of homelessness and poverty and I would describe my views as slightly harsh but I still believe in them. My view for that essay was that there should be no reason why homelessness and poverty exist in this country when everyone here has it so much better than the people of my home country of Macedonia.…
