Homeless children face health problems twice as often as children whose families have a yearly income of more than 35,000 dollars (Morris). Health issues could eventually lead to major problems for the individual and cause death. This is bad for the country because this child could have gone on to discover major scientific, political, or social advancements, but is no longer able. This same concept is enforced in the fact that homeless babies show significantly slower development than other children do, not to mention that there is often no method of transportation from shelters to schools and that a lack of academic and medical records makes school registration difficult (Morris). One study showed that over 60% of homeless people acknowledged having participated in criminal activity. Many of them have committed minor crimes, such as burglary, trespassing, or shoplifting (“Homelessness”). Homeless people will frequently commit these crimes in order to make up for their own lack of resources. Municipal criminalization of the homeless is also a contributing factor to the crimes committed by the homeless. There are laws that can keep people from begging, sleeping, or camping in public places, which directly affects the homeless (“Homelessness”).
