They ruin many lives through the United States every year (“Causes of Homelessness). Drugs are viewed as a way to escape everyday problems such as poverty or depression. However this point of view can lead to illegal substance addictions (Riecken). To drug addicts, drugs can become a daily part of life which can have life ruining consequence. Once you become addicted to more serious drugs such as methamphetamine, heroin, or cocaine it can lead you to do anything to obtain more (Riecken). As stated in a 2009 survey by The National Coalition For The Homeless “Thirty eight percent of homeless depend on alcohol and twenty six percent became homeless due to alcohol negatively affecting their lives” (National Coalition). This survey goes to show how alcohol can destroy lives. Many people spend large portions of their paychecks on alcohol and other drugs to help temporarily blur them from their lives (“Causes of Homelessness). However, these types of situations can lead people to not have enough money to pay bills and obtain basic necessities, especially if you have children to provide for. On top of this if they were to get fired for coming to work drunk it would completely cut off their income possibly causing homelessness. This type of scenario affects thousands nationwide every
