Homelessness In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls

Homelessness is everyday life for the Walls family as they keep on the move around the country looking for their everyday needs. The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, is a memoir about her life growing up in an unstable family while living in poverty. In the book, the parents try and fend for their kids to try and help them grow up the right way, but it doesn't always work out the way anyone would expect it to. Although there are many ways to cope with different situations and feelings, Jeannette uses the only way she knows how, which is to get away from the situation in all. First, when the family has no food in the house the kids are very hungry so they go out to try and scavenge food. Jeannette steals other kids food during recess, and when she goes over her friends house, she takes food when no one's looking. Brian does the same things just with the neighbors instead. A guy there named Robbie sat with Jeanette and danced with her and got drunk while playing pool against Rex Walls and lost every time, paying Jeanette's Dad for every time he lost. Robbie eventually got to bring Jeannette upstairs even though Jeannette was trying to resist “ I’m not sure, [Jeannette] said. Aw, come on, he said and shouted at Dad, I’m going to take your girl upstairs” (Walls 212). Jeanette is very uncomfortable in this situation and shows by trying to tell her dad that she doesn't want to do this when she says she’s “not sure”. Since Jeannette dad won’t help her she has to deal with the situation another way which is to just get away from everything just like she’s been doing the whole book. When she does get away she doesn't even do anything about what happened she just pretends nothing happened at all that
