Homelessness in the United States is getting worse and worse every year. Currently 3.5 million people in the U.S are experiencing it and the worst part is that 33% of this are youth under the age of 24. The shelters are filling up and this issue that could be resolved is getting worse. Homelessness is defined “ an individual who lacks housing ( without regard to where the individual is a member of a family), including an individual whose primary residence during the night is supervised public or private facility(e.g. shelters) that provides temporary living accommodations, and an individual who is a resident in transitional housing- nhchc.org. This refers to the people living in their vehicles, storage units or friends couches or in other words provisionally accommodated. These people are finding places to stay and dealing with there current situation and not being seen by others. About 1 in 5 people are living in vehicles in Los Angeles today and around 1.6 million people have been in emergency shelters in the past year. People living in there vehicles feel anxious and stressed out constantly and experience many issues with this situation. Firstly it is illegal to sleep in your vehicle on public roads so it is hard to find place to park your vehicles without waking up to a citation. Secondly there is the issue of paying the fees for the vehicles such as tax and insurance which can also lead to citations and possible repossession of the car. There have been acts implemented to try and help these people such as the safe parking program where churches and business allow people to park in there parking lots overnight so they can have a less stressful nights sleep and not have to worry about being woken up and told to move. There is a story online about a lady named Carol who was going through this situation and living in her minivan with her two children and she stated that she was not able to sleep because she was anxious and stressed out all the time however when she found out about the safe parking program she felt a sense of ease and even though she was still …show more content…
Some shelters occupy over a 100 beds which are full every night and people are getting turned away. There are waiting lists for beds and sometimes these lists can take up to 45 days long and which in the mean time you are having to find somewhere to stay or having to live on the streets. Another issue we have is that we are running out of funds to support the shelters and are not able to open up new ones or find places for people to stay ,so we cannot help the growing amount of people in need. There are different types of shelters for the different types of homelessness. There are emergency, transitional and permanent, all three are being utilized to the fullest and without them we would see poverty of every
