There are many factors that lead to poverty but those determinates also lead to drugs and alcohol abuse as well such as low education lack of family support or structure mental illness and unemployment’s. Often when denied service most homeless people self medicate to subside the pain leading to more health and physical problem such as addiction. To many observers the homeless mentally ill are vivid testimony to governmental indifference to the plight of poor citizens; they represent our nation's failure to respond compassionately to its people's needs for shelter, sustenance, and effective medical care"(Watkins 1997) In addition having alcohol problem can also make it card for homeless people to find safe haven or shelters since many service don't accept people that are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Other barriers that homeless people also face is getting the right treatment for their conduction however, often the services offered to help homeless individuals struggling with addition or mental heath are not properly taken avenge of because of the lack of health insurance and financial resources to pay for rehab, having low motivation to see help due to illness such as depression or feeling hopelessness but also having the lack of awareness of resources for homeless people.
