Kicked out on the streets or searching for a new life, homelessness is more than just the stereotypical hobo. Being away from home can be an immense issue, not only physically but mentally. It could also be an eye-opening experience and give one a chance to feel alive. After analyzing various sources, it is easy to see that homelessness and power go hand and hand when it comes to one’s identity. Homelessness and power, simultaneously, gives one new notions and changes their identity positively and negatively. The home that I grew up in has built a positive foundation for my identity. Home is where I have all of the connections with the people I know and love. An important example of those people being my parents and the power that they have over me in the household. Bader, it is evident that homelessness has a positive impact on one’s identity as a college student. Eleanor starts off by telling the story of a twenty-two-year-old college student (693). After being physically abused, she was forced to leave the comfort of her home and live on the streets. She explains the hardships of moving from place to place to not only have a place to lay her head at night, but to survive. Despite her obstacles, she had goals of completing school and having a future. She stayed true to herself by making a way to continue with schooling and making it to class on time. Although it may be hard living on the streets, there are grants that ensure that students can continue with their dreams and stay enrolled in college. Eleanor also states that’s three students that have all be granted a LeTendre grant (694). She notes, “Thanks, in part, to these funds, all three have been attending college and doing well” (694).
