During my volunteer time at CISS, I witnessed and interacted with people who were suffering from mental illnesses like schizophrenia. There should be absolutely no reason for these people to be living in homeless shelters or even worse on the streets. The government should provide housing for these people in homes for the mentally ill where they have caretakers who provide them with food shelter and keep up with their medicine. There should've been no reason for Gov. Branstad to shut down the mental facilities in the state of Iowa. This absurd decision leads to a negative feedback loop on the state's budget. The mentally ill end up rotating around correctional facilities which cost the government money. The process of actually processing them through the system cost the state money. Closing these facilities is very counter-intuitive and inhumane. These people can't help themselves is a societal duty to take care of the mentally ill and disabled. Their place is in homes for the mentally ill and with caretakers not in homeless shelters and on the streets. In conclusion, views on the world are always susceptible to change just like my views changed with this immersion experience. Also just because people are born into a great opportunity does not mean that there aren't any hindrances to keeping them away from their potential to succeed. My volunteer time at CISS made me realise that we need to help the homeless and mentally ill with governmental programs such as housing first, addiction treatment and the reinstatement of housing for the mentally ill. It's human nature to help one another and I believe that we should all do our part to help one
