In last Monday’s City of Parramatta meeting, the council declared unanimously to pass the motion of providing homeless and crowded dwelling services to the local area.
During the meeting, Councillor Dr Patricia Prociv proposed a C, amendment to apply a homeless policy and implementation to the LGA (local government area). The councillor states, that there needs to be a focus on increasing affordable housing stock across the LGA. This needs to be delivered by the private, public and social housing sectors.

The 2016 Census suggests that the scale of severely crowded dwellings, especially in the private rental sector is dramatically increasing. The number of persons living in severely crowded dwellings in the Parramatta LGA from 2011 to 2016 has seen a 23% increase of homes people in Parramatta. From 2011 to 2016 the number jumped from 266 to 577 people living in crowded dwellings.
Councillor Davis states, that Parramatta is a place where people converge for a range of reasons - government services (FACS, DOCS, Immigration, Legal Aid), community services (Parramatta Mission, Salvos, Anglicare, Catholic Care), support services (drug, alcohol, domestic violence, mental health), geographic location (transport hub) and health services (Cumberland and Westmead Hospitals, methadone clinics).
Being the central city and the place where a myriad of services is “centred” goes a long way towards explaining why there is a high concentration of what we would consider “traditional” homeless people in our city.
