Most experts tend to say that mental illness causes veterans to make poor judgement or cannot really function back into society. While there are programs across the country that help veterans with their mental disables, but many veterans don’t really know how to receive help with their current problem. The major issue is that these veterans are not really receiving any guidance on how to get help. In a recent survey of veterans “that whereas an estimated 21% percent of veterans in the general population have used V.A services” (Desai 284). The V.A (Veteran Affairs) is not clearly doing its job because less than one fourth of veterans who know about this program. When theses veterans who are part of this program they do not tend to receive the best health care. Some of the medical programs do not give proper treatment to our veterans such as the “national homeless veterans outreach programs failed to receive medical care within 6 months of the program entry” (Desai 285). The government is not really helping our veterans by not putting in the time and resources to help them out. Most of the veterans don’t really try to receive medical help. Most veterans try to “self-medicate” themselves. The veterans will use “alcohol and/or illegal drugs... thus adding substance abuse” (Benson 175). When soldiers consume drugs or alcohol then it makes them feel that there problems are going away. In reality it causes them to make bad choices in the future because they are harming their bodies physically and mentally. The Veterans Affairs in 2009 decide to take a quick action by “plan includes a multi-pronged attack on the various causes of homelessness among veterans… drawn attention to what have been identified as the primary impediments to homeless veterans' return to productive society.” (Benson 176). In order to help homeless veterans the government create better health care programs. Therefore these veterans can become better people in society. It might take years, but the government has to put in the time and resources to help to fix this
