Consider a world without help. No one to give you directions to the theater. No help to move into your new house. Now consider how a homeless youth feels without programs to help them overcome their situation. “The Department of Justice estimates that every year, over 1.7 million teens experience homelessness in the US.” (11 Facts About Homeless Teens). Homelessness may be the result of abuse , mental health problems, drug addiction of a family member, or aging out of foster care. The definition of youth homelessness is an “unaccompanied youth ages 12 and older (up to age 17, 21, or 24) who are without family support.” (Homeless Youth: Defining The Problem And The Population). Although some believe money spent on programs and counseling for homeless youth is a waste, it should still be provided because, it equips them with vital life skills, academic support, and lowers risky behavior.

Until you come across The Compass Project , one of many organisations that focuses on teaching homeless children skills like communication, physical and mental health, how to apply to college, and how to cook. “87% of youth attending this program reported that they are better to cope when things go wrong.” ( Thecompassprogect.org). The Alternative House also has programs that teaches homeless adolescents these skills and many more. Which in terms lowers the chance a kid will have to return to the streets. homeless teens turn into homeless adults, but with the knowledge the programs teaches them, they are able to efficiently live on their own if still
